Call (916) 712-7030Free to call. Connects you with an independent local cabinet maker.

Most Sacramento cabinet projects start with a kitchen that no longer works, a vanity that has swollen around the sink, or a closet, garage or living room that needs storage built to fit. Sacramento Custom Cabinet Line does not build, sell or install cabinets. It is a free call line: you call (916) 712-7030, describe the project, and get connected with an independent local cabinet maker or installer. You and that business agree on the design, price and timing directly.

Sacramento's housing shapes what cabinet work involves. The city's median home was built in 1977, and 54% of homes date from before 1980, according to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. Many kitchens still have soffits above the upper cabinets, walls and floors that are no longer flat, and painted surfaces that may contain lead. The EPA says about three-quarters of U.S. homes built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint, so the age of your house matters before anyone sands or tears out old cabinets.

Signs you should call

  • Swollen or soft sink baseA slow leak under the sink is the usual cause; Fixr says water-damaged laminate or MDF cabinets are usually better replaced than repainted.
  • Shelves bowing in the middleConsumer Reports notes that 5/8- or 1/2-inch particleboard shelves may sag, while 3/4-inch plywood holds up better.
  • Peeling doors near the oven or toasterHeat and moisture loosen the thin vinyl skin on thermofoil doors, and peeled doors usually need replacing.
  • Drawers coming apartStapled particleboard drawers wear out first; Consumer Reports looks for solid-wood sides, dovetail joints and plywood bottoms.
  • Upper cabinets pulling off the wallWall cabinets should hang from solid mounting rails screwed into studs, and a loose upper is dangerous in an earthquake.
  • Doors that rub or gap with the seasonsSolid wood swells in wet winters and shrinks in dry summers; hinges can be adjusted, but large or growing gaps need a look.
  • A layout that no longer worksMoving the sink, range or a wall takes the job past refacing into a permitted remodel.

How much do custom cabinets cost in Sacramento?

Installed custom cabinets cost about $500 to $1,230 per linear foot nationally, compared with $150 to $650 for semi-custom and $100 to $300 for stock cabinets, according to Fixr's 2026 cost guide. HomeGuide puts a full custom kitchen at $15,000 to $30,000 for an average-size room. Fixr says an average kitchen has 25 to 30 linear feet of cabinets. These are national figures; this site found no published Sacramento cabinet price data.

Updating cabinets you already have costs less: Angi's 2026 data averages $7,235 for refacing and $938 for professional painting, though Fixr's painting average is $4,000 because it assumes more prep and spraying.

What is the difference between custom, semi-custom and stock cabinets?

Stock cabinets are ready-made boxes in set sizes, usually in 3-inch width steps. Semi-custom cabinets are built to order from a manufacturer's catalog with more sizes, finishes and accessories; Consumer Reports calls them a sound choice for most kitchens. Custom cabinets are built for your room by a cabinet maker, so they can fill odd walls, go to any ceiling height and use any wood or finish.

Lead time is part of the price: Fixr says fully custom cabinets take 6 to 12 weeks to build and semi-custom cabinets average 6 to 8 weeks.

Do you need a permit for new cabinets in Sacramento?

Usually not for the cabinets themselves. The 2025 California Residential Code, section R105.2, exempts painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work from building permits, and the City of Sacramento publishes the same list. The city notes that related work may still need a permit, such as relocating electrical fixtures to fit new cabinets, and the exemption does not apply in design review or preservation districts or to historic landmarks.

Plan on permits from the city's Building Division when a project moves plumbing or gas lines, adds outlets or hardwired under-cabinet lighting, ducts a range hood outdoors or alters a wall, window or door; structural changes go through plan review.

How much can a cabinet maker ask for as a deposit in California?

No more than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. That limit comes from Business and Professions Code section 7159.5, and the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) states there are no exceptions for special-order materials, which covers custom cabinet boxes. After the down payment, a contractor may not request or accept payment that exceeds the value of the work performed or material delivered.

The only exception is a contractor who furnishes a performance and payment bond, lien and completion bond, bond equivalent or joint control approved by the Registrar of Contractors. Taking an oversized deposit without one is a misdemeanor. If you sign at home, you also get three business days to cancel, or five if you are 65 or older.

Who can build and install cabinets in California?

The CSLB's C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry classification covers contractors who make cabinets, doors, trim and other finish carpentry and who place, erect and finish cabinets in buildings. A B General Building contractor may also take a carpentry project, and painting contractors hold the C-33 classification. Look up any license number on the CSLB license check.

Since January 1, 2025, unlicensed people may take jobs under $1,000 in labor and materials only if the work needs no permit and they hire no workers, the CSLB says, so a full cabinet job needs a licensed contractor.

Why do wood cabinets move in Sacramento's climate?

Sacramento air swings from dry to damp. At Sacramento Executive Airport, average afternoon humidity is about 29% in July and August and about 70% in December and January, according to the Western Regional Climate Center. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that wood shrinks as it loses moisture and swells as it gains it, which can cause warping, checking and splitting.

Solid-wood door panels float in their frames for that reason, and many painted doors use MDF center panels, which move less. One manufacturer, Superior Cabinets, calls hairline cracks at the joints of painted wood doors normal rather than a defect. Store new cabinets inside the house, not a hot garage, before installation.

Are new cabinets safe for indoor air?

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted a rule in 2007 limiting formaldehyde emissions from hardwood plywood, particleboard and MDF, with Phase 2 limits phased in from 2010 to 2012, and it requires finished goods such as cabinets to be made from compliant panels. The EPA's national TSCA Title VI rule uses the same limits, and since March 22, 2019 those products must be labeled TSCA Title VI compliant.

How should cabinets be secured for earthquakes?

The Earthquake Country Alliance recommends latches on kitchen cabinets, since unsecured doors fly open in a quake, and securing top-heavy furniture to wall studs. For wall cabinets, Consumer Reports suggests mounting strips of 3/4-inch hardwood or metal. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates about 17,800 emergency-room-treated tip-over injuries a year, so anchor tall bookcases and pantry units too.

How does the Sacramento Custom Cabinet Line work?

Call (916) 712-7030 and describe the project: new kitchen cabinets, a vanity, a closet, built-ins, refacing or garage storage. The line connects you with an independent local cabinet maker or installer who serves your area. The call is free and you are not obligated to hire anyone. The cabinet maker runs a separate business, so you agree on the design, price, schedule and contract directly with them.

Sacramento homes and local rules

What Sacramento's homes mean for your cabinet work

Sacramento's homes have a median build year of 1977, which makes the typical house about 49 years old. Many kitchens that age have had at least one cabinet update, and the boxes left behind range from solid to tired. If yours are square and sound, refacing or painting can cost far less than new cabinets; if the sides are delaminating or the sink base is swollen, replacement makes more sense. With an 8-foot ceiling, 42-inch uppers hung 54 inches off the floor reach the ceiling exactly, so a soffit or crown molding means choosing 30- or 36-inch uppers instead.

30% of Sacramento's homes were built before 1960. Kitchens that old have often been altered more than once, and a cabinet tear-out can expose wiring, plumbing or framing that was patched along the way. If you want countertop outlets that meet today's code, plan on an electrician: 2025-code kitchen checklists call for at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for the counters and GFCI protection on every countertop receptacle, and that work needs a permit from the City of Sacramento Community Development Department, Building Division.

About Sacramento

Sacramento has long been called the 'City of Trees' for its large urban canopy, and its older central neighborhoods are served by a combined sewer system (sewage and stormwater in one pipe) while newer areas have separated sewers.

Local rules, utilities and conditions in Sacramento

Sacramento gets its electricity from SMUD. If a kitchen remodel replaces a gas range or cooktop with induction, SMUD pays a $750 rebate, or $100 when the old unit was electric. The cooktop must be at least 24 inches wide, the application is due within 180 days of purchase, and SMUD asks for before and after photos. Plan the cabinet cutout around the exact model, and remember that a new range circuit is electrical work that needs a permit.

A cabinet-only job in Sacramento usually skips the permit counter, because the California Residential Code exempts cabinets, countertops and similar finish work. Two things change that. Any plumbing, electrical, gas or mechanical change, such as an island outlet, a relocated sink or a ducted hood, needs a permit from the City of Sacramento Community Development Department, Building Division. And the permit question decides who may do the work: the Contractors State License Board says a job that needs a permit requires a licensed contractor even when it costs less than $1,000.

Custom cabinet shops often ask for a large deposit, but California law limits it. Business and Professions Code section 7159.5 caps the down payment on a home improvement contract at $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less, and the CSLB says there are no exceptions for special-order materials. After that, payments can't run ahead of the work performed or the materials delivered. The only exception is a contractor who furnishes a bond or joint control approved by the Registrar of Contractors.

Hot, dry summers and wet winters are normal in Sacramento. The Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook recommends installing interior woodwork close to the moisture content it will have in use, about 8% on average across most of the U.S., and says large solid panels should be free to move across the grain. One cabinet manufacturer, Superior Cabinets, says hairline cracks at the joints of painted wood doors are a normal result of that movement rather than a defect, and recommends keeping indoor humidity at 40% to 50%.

Renting in Sacramento?

With 52% of homes owner-occupied, Sacramento has a large share of renters. If you want more storage, freestanding pieces you own are the simplest route, but anchoring a tall bookcase or wardrobe means screws in the wall, so ask the landlord first and check your lease for who handles repairs. The Department of Real Estate's tenant guide notes that tenants with disabilities may make reasonable modifications, such as lowering a cabinet, usually at their own cost, and the landlord may require restoring the unit at move-out.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get custom cabinets?
Fixr's 2026 guide says fully custom cabinets take 6 to 12 weeks to build, and its custom-cabinet guide puts semi-custom at about 6 to 8 weeks. Add time for measuring, design approval and any permitted plumbing or electrical work. Refacing is faster: Fixr says an average kitchen takes three to five days on site once the doors and veneer arrive. Ask for delivery and installation dates in the contract.
Do I need a licensed contractor to install cabinets?
Yes, for nearly any full cabinet job. The CSLB says an unlicensed person may only take work under $1,000 in labor and materials if it needs no permit and they have no employees. Cabinet makers usually hold the C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry license or a B General Building license. Check the license number on the CSLB's free online lookup before you sign.
Can I paint my own cabinets in an older Sacramento home?
You can, but test for lead first if the house was built before 1978. The EPA says its lead renovation rule generally does not apply to homeowners working on their own homes, but it urges lead-safe work practices. Anyone you pay to disturb more than 6 square feet of paint per room in a pre-1978 home must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified.
Does SMUD offer rebates for a kitchen remodel?
Not for cabinets, but SMUD pays $750 when you replace a gas cooktop or range with an induction model and $100 when you replace an electric one. The cooktop must be at least 24 inches wide, and the application is due within 180 days of purchase with before and after photos. Roseville Electric offers up to $600 for induction cooktops 30 inches or wider.
