How deep are built-in bookshelves?

Most built-in bookshelves are about 12 inches deep, which WoodBin calls perhaps the most common bookshelf depth; 8-inch shelves suit paperbacks and small hardcovers, and 16-inch shelves are ideal for oversized books and odd-sized reading materials. Built-ins often sit on a run of lower cabinets that is deeper than the shelves above, so the countertop forms a ledge. Bob Vila's sizing guide notes base cabinets come in 12-, 15- and 18-inch depths as well as the standard 24 inches.

How far can a shelf span without sagging?

WoodBin's shelf design guidelines say a fully loaded bookshelf carries 20 to 25 pounds per running foot and that the eye notices sag of about 1/32 inch per foot. For 3/4-inch stock, it calls 30 to 36 inches a practical span. Its table of maximum no-sag spans for 10-inch-wide shelves is 26 inches for particleboard, 32 inches for plywood, 42 inches for plywood with one 1½-inch support cleat and 48 inches with two.

Span matters more than people expect. WoodBin's Sagulator notes that doubling a shelf's span makes it sag eight times as much, and that wood shelves sag about 50% more over time beyond the first deflection, so it targets 0.02 inch per foot or less. Consumer Reports also recommends 3/4-inch plywood over 5/8- or 1/2-inch particleboard. If you want wide openings, ask for a solid-wood front edge, a thicker shelf or a center divider.

What goes into a built-in entertainment center or media wall?

HomeGuide puts a built-in entertainment center at $1,500 to $9,000, and more than $12,000 for a large floor-to-ceiling unit with drawers, lighting and hidden outlets. Plan the wiring before the cabinet maker builds the boxes. The California Residential Code exempts cabinets from permits and also exempts low-voltage wiring that runs at less than 25 volts and can't supply more than 50 watts, but new 120-volt outlets or hardwired lighting inside a built-in need an electrical permit.

TVs and the furniture under them are the main tip-over hazard: the CPSC estimates about 17,800 emergency-room-treated tip-over injuries a year from 2020 to 2022 and urges anchoring TVs, bookcases and dressers to the wall. A media wall that is screwed to the framing, with the TV on a wall mount, avoids that risk.

What about home office built-ins?

Modernize's 2026 guide puts home office or other built-in cabinets, including desks and storage walls, at about $2,000 to $7,500 or more, and HomeGuide lists bedroom or home office built-ins at $1,000 to $8,000. Angi's 2026 data puts built-in cabinets in general at an average of $4,500, or $200 to $600 per linear foot. File drawers, a printer pullout and outlets above the desk are the details to settle in the drawings.

How are built-ins anchored?

A built-in is screwed into the wall framing, usually through a hanging rail at the back, and leveled on its base. The Earthquake Country Alliance says straps for tall furniture must be screwed into wall studs, located with a stud finder, and that heavy objects belong on lower shelves. For freestanding bookcases, the same approach applies: anchor them so they can't tip in a quake or when a child climbs them.

Who builds built-ins, and what does labor cost?

Built-in bookcases are finish carpentry, which falls under the CSLB's C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry license; jobs over $1,000 or that need a permit require a licensed contractor. Fixr's 2024 guide says a finish carpenter or cabinet maker typically charges $66 to $121 an hour, and puts most built-in shelving projects at $400 to $5,000, with an average of $2,700.

Frequently asked questions

How much do built-in bookshelves cost?
HomeGuide puts built-in bookshelves at $300 to $850 per linear foot installed, or $2,000 to $7,500 for a typical project, with premade units at the low end and custom built-ins at $400 to $1,000 or more per foot. Fixr's 2024 guide gives $400 to $5,000, averaging $2,700. Cabinet doors, drawers, lighting and solid hardwood raise the price. These are national figures.
How deep should built-in bookshelves be?
About 12 inches suits most books, according to WoodBin, with 8 inches enough for paperbacks and 16 inches for oversized books or media. Lower cabinets under the shelves are often deeper, from 12 to 24 inches, which gives you a ledge and room for bins or files. WoodBin calls 16-inch shelves less common but useful for oversized books.
Do built-in bookshelves need a permit?
The shelving and cabinets don't: the California Residential Code exempts cabinets and similar finish work. Wiring does. New 120-volt outlets and hardwired lights need an electrical permit, while low-voltage wiring under 25 volts and 50 watts is exempt. Ask the cabinet maker to coordinate any electrical work with a licensed electrician.
Can built-ins go around a fireplace?
Yes, and HomeGuide puts built-ins around a fireplace at $1,000 to $8,000. Wood shelving and trim must keep the clearances to the fireplace opening required by the fireplace or insert manufacturer and your building department, so get those numbers before the design is drawn. Built-ins around a fireplace also need anchoring to studs like any tall unit.
